STRANDFONTEIN PAVILION

PROJECT INFORMATION

PUBLIC OPEN DAY: SATURDAY, 22 NOVEMBER 2025

The Strandfontein Pavilion Refurbishment project aims to enhance the pavilion and surrounding amenities, transforming the area into a more vibrant and welcoming public space. The project will involve removing unsafe sections of the pavilion, refurbishing the remaining structure, and improving access to the tidal pool and other coastal amenities. It will also include renovating the amphitheatre, upgrading the parking areas, and enhancing the landscape to give the pavilion a refreshed and welcoming appearance.

These upgrades will align with recent developments at Fisherman’s Lane and the 2022 Conceptual Development Framework for the Strandfontein Coastal Urban Node, while also incorporating themes that have emerged from the Cultural Mapping process. The City’s Community Services and Health Directorate has allocated a capital budget for this upgrade to address both current and future community needs, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2026.

CULTURAL MAPPING

A key focus of the Strandfontein Pavilion Refurbishment is the integration of cultural mapping and planning to reflect the local community’s history, values, and identity. This approach ensures that the refurbished space not only meets functional requirements but also fosters community connection, placemaking, and a strong sense of belonging.

The Cultural Mapping process has played a central role in shaping a design that is culturally inclusive, meaningful, and connected to place. This process has guided the designs to reflect the unique identity, heritage, and values of the Strandfontein community and surrounds.

Key aims include:

  • Identifying local cultural and historical elements to inform design.

  • Embedding stories, symbols, and identities into the public space.

  • Promoting inclusivity, social cohesion, and a sense of belonging.

Through this culturally informed process, the pavilion will be transformed into more than just a recreational space. It will become a vibrant, shared destination that celebrates community identity and engagement.
